My Review

Format: Ebook

The Spiritual Warfare Answer Book by Dr. David Jeremiah explains why everyone should study spiritual warfare. Spiritual warfare a subject that many people ignore and encourage others to ignore. But the truth is if we ignore it or not we are in a spiritual war and we need to understand how to fight so we do not become casualties of war or caught in crossfire. It is time that Christians take spiritual warfare seriously. Dr. David Jeremiah explains who we are fighting against and that every true Christian is called to be a soldier. He answers many questions such as Why study spiritual warfare?, How can I be a courageous warrior for God when I feel powerless?, Why is it important to understand the enemy?, What do we know about Satan’s origin?, Are demons real?, What are demons?, and Can a believer be possessed by a demon? The author spends the rest of the book answering questions about the armor of God. He explains each piece of armor, the protection, importance and why to wear each piece. The author ends the book with a section on prayer and a conclusion. There is a nice reference guide in the back including Spiritual Warfare Reference Guide and Prayer Reference Guide. Although I do not personally agree with all the answers that Dr. David Jeremiah gives, he does give a good beginning in understanding spiritual warfare.  I recommend this book to anyone studying spiritual warfare.

Book Description

That’s what the NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible provides. Every page is packed with expert insight into the customs, culture, and literature of Bible times. These fascinating explanations will serve to clarify your study of the Scriptures, reinforcing your confidence and bringing difficult passages of Scripture into sharp focus.

The Bible was originally written to an ancient people removed from us by thousands of years and thousands of miles. The Scriptures include subtle culturally based nuances, undertones, and references to ancient events, literature and customs that were intuitively understood by those who first heard the Scriptures read. For us to hear the Scriptures as they did, we need a window into their world.

The NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible, with notes from Dr. John H. Walton (Wheaton College) in the Old Testament and Dr. Craig S. Keener (Asbury Theological Seminary) in the New Testament, brings to life the ancient world of Scripture for modern readers.

My Review

The NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible is an impressive book for people who are interested with the cultural background of the Bible. The page quality and feel is soft and not too thin. This is a heavy book. I would not want to carry this book around but it is perfect for a study. The cross references are helpful but could be more extensive. The study notes are unique in that they focus on the culture pertaining to the people, the land, the literature and political nature of the specific culture in the Bible. The NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible has several indexes including a nice concordance, a useful index to maps, and an index of articles.  The full color pictures and maps help connect to the archaeology of the time period. Each book has an introduction describing the uniqueness of each book like the authorship, date and purpose. There is a section between the Old and New Testaments entitled “The Time Between The Testaments” I recommend this Bible to anyone interested in biblical history and culture.

Book Review: I Am Found: Quitting the Game of Hide and Seek with God and Others by Laura Dingman

From the Back Cover

Are you tired of battling shame?
Long to be truly known and deeply loved?¿
Hesitant to show others the real you?

We are all made for connection, but many of us live with walls up and hearts closed. What would it take for us to let go and stand tall and unashamed?

I Am Found guides us in just that. This six-week Bible study on shame and identity explores how we can own our stories, trust God’s affections, and relate honestly with Him and others.

Each week begins with biblical teaching and is followed by five days of guided reflection. Drenched in Scripture, and with plenty of space to journal and savor biblical truths, I Am Found is a personal journey of transformation through God’s Word.

Laura Dingman invites you to build your life on a beautiful, liberating truth: Jesus loves us in our weakness, but He doesn’t leave us there.

My Review:

I Am Found is a 6-week Bible Study that helps us to learn that the reason behind why we hide is shame, guilt and humiliation. Each day has several scripture readings, many questions to journal what the reader takes from each study and a daily prayer. I like how all the Scripture and activities to do are in blue ink while the author’s writing is in black ink. The paper quality is perfect for a journal. The author divides this study into six chapters each including six days worth of study: an introduction and five sessions. Week 1: Fig Leaves Don’t Hide Anything, Week 2: Know Your Enemy, Week 3: Come Out, Come Out, Whereever Yu Are!, Week 4: You Are Not Alone, Week 5: You Are Enough, Week 6: You Are Found.
I recommend this Bible Study to anyone who needs encouragement about who they are in Christ because this book greatly encouraged me.
