Book Review: A Minute of Vision for Men by Roger Patterson

51jolq1yspl

Do you have a vision for your life?
All of us need a compelling vision to live for. Scripture says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.”

Today, so many of us are living on autopilot instead of engaging the battle of living up to our God-given potential. We lack a vision for life. Too often, we settle for less than what is best for us, our families, and our careers. We struggle with pinpointing our purpose in life.

A Minute of Vision for Men is an investment in a different sort of life—one with vision, purpose, and integrity. This book will help you connect with your purpose. It’s written so that you can start your day on the right foot, focused on what matters the most.

Start each day with a potent, daily dose of vision for your life.

My Review:
A Minute of Vision for Men: 365 Motivational Moments to Kick-Start Your Day
by Roger Patterson is a well endorsed devotional. I did not request to review this book. I requested a different book but got this book instead. My husband seems to like it and he is not the reading type. Each daily devotion has a short story and a scripture verse. Each devotion covers one page so it is perfect for someone who is in a hurry or not into reading, like my husband. I think it is a nice little hardcover book (4.5 x 6.5 in). I like the cover, the binding and the page quality. The only thing that I do not like is that the devotions are organized by day of the year (January 1st, etc.) and the book has no February 29th for the 1/4 of the time that there is a leap year. In my opinion it should be organized “Day 1, Day 2, etc.” and have a bookmark. With that said, I think this is a delightful little devotional for men.

Book Review: Say & Pray Devotions by Diane Stortz

_225_350_book_2038_cover

Book Description:

Say and Pray devotions with your little ones today!

Your youngsters want to be just like you. How exciting! Help them grow in their faith and learn more about God’s love with Say & Pray Devotions.

Say & Pray Devotions features short devotions and lots of labeled illustrations so your little one can practice identifying objects and words on their own! This book is a great tool to start a devotional time with little ones, as it will help you teach them about God, and the labeled pictures will help start a life of faith.

This is a nice complement to the bestselling Say & Pray Bible.

My Review:

I got this book for my 2 year old daughter to review. She absolutely loves this book. She will spend a long time turning the pages of this board book and pointing to all the different objects on the pages. Many objects are identified to help with sight reading but several are not. I was hesitant to get this book to review but it is by far my 2 year olds favorite book in our house. She carries it carefully and reads it over and over. My 11 year old enjoys reading the book to her sister because the printed words are short yet you can make the story as long as you like. Each page has a prayer, a scripture and a praise. Even as I type up this review, my two year old took the book from me. I highly suggest this book for any young child.

Book Review: The Parables of Jesus by James Montgomery Boice

theparablesofjesus

From the Back Cover

Some sections of the Bible give us grand theology. Some move us to grateful responses to God. The parables ask us if there has been any real difference in our lives. —James Montgomery Boice

The Parables of Jesus offers a scholarly yet simple explanation of all of Jesus’ parables. Boice captures the enduring message of each one and pastorally guides us in to a proper response.

About the Author

JAMES MONTGOMERY BOICE (1938-2000) (A.B., Harvard University; B.D., Princeton Theological Seminary; D.Th., University of Basel, Switzerland; D.D., Theological Seminary of the Reformed Episcopal Church) was speaker on the worldwide radio ministry of the Bible Study Hour and pastor of historic Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. His titles include Jesus on Trial and The Doctrines of Grace. He was married to Linda Ann Boice, who continues to teach at the high school they co-founded.

My Review:
The Parables of Jesus by James Montgomery Boice pulls the reader into a study of the parables that Jesus taught in such a depth that I have never seen in a book. The author separates the book into six sections: Parables of the Kingdom, Parables of Salvation, Parables of Wisdom and Folly, Parables of the Christian Life, Parables of Judgement and the Notes/Index section. Each section has four to five parables. Each parable is well explained in both ancient Jewish and modern aspects.
I like the feel of the cover and the paper thickness. The Parables of Jesus by James Montgomery Boice was well edited and the format flows nicely.

I suggest this book to anyone who wants to learn about the Parables of Jesus or how God speaks and teaches in general.

Book Review: Prayers and Answered Prayers published by Thomas Nelson

Book Description:

Prayers and Answered Prayers will engage young minds and hearts as kids learn more and more about how God answers prayer.

With its two-in-one format, kids will have the chance to write down their prayers and thanks and then record how God answers their prayers as well. With examples of the great prayers throughout the Bible, many Scripture verses, guided prompts for children to grow more comfortable in their prayer lives, and ways to help them discover how their prayers were answered, this two-books-in-one format will be a fun, attractive way to learn one of the most important pieces of faith—talking and listening to God.

Designed as a first prayer journal for young believers, the book features two smaller booklets in one bright, full coverage glitter cover. Kids can write down prayer requests and then record how their prayers are answered inside.

Prayers and Answered Prayers engages children with prayer through an interactive, unique format that will draw the attention of parents and children alike!

Help your young children learn about God’s way of communicating and loving His children through the unique prayer journal Prayers and Answered Prayers.

My Review:

Prayers and Answered Prayers is a fantastic prayer journal book. It is actually two books in a thick, clear plastic cover. The glitter on the cover really catches your eye as it shimmers in the light. It was hard to get used to maneuvering though the book with it being split in the middle but I think the uniqueness would be appealing to teens and preteens.  Prayers and Answered Prayers is more of an activity book than what I think of as a journal because there are many guided prompts and questions to help the reader learn about themselves and who they are in God. I was impressed with the amount of scripture activities. I suggested Prayers and Answered Prayers to a friend before I was able to write up this review. I recommend this book for any artistic teen or preteen who wants to learn more about who they are in God.

Book Review: After Acts by Bryan Litfin

afteracts

Back of Book:

What really happened after Acts?

If you’ve ever wondered what happened to the biblical characters after Acts—from the well-known Matthew to the lesser-known Bartholomew—then this book is for you. Join Dr. Bryan Litfin as he guides you through Scripture and other ancient literature to sift fact from fiction, real-life from legend.

Skillfully researched and clearly written, After Acts is as accurate as it is engaging. Gain a window into the religious milieu of the ancient and medieval church. Unearth artifacts and burial sites. Learn what really happened to your favorite characters and what you should truly remember them for.

  • Did Paul ever make it to Spain? Was he beheaded in Rome?
  • Is it true that Peter was crucified upside down?
  • Was the Virgin Mary really bodily assumed into heaven?

The book of Acts ends at chapter 28. But its characters lived on.

BRYAN LITFIN grew up in Dallas, TX; Oxford, England; and Memphis, TN. He earned a degree in print journalism from the University of Tennessee, a master’s degree in historical theology at Dallas Seminary, and a Ph.D. in the field of ancient church history at the University of Virginia. He now serves as Professor of Theology at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL. Bryan lives with his wife and two teenaged children in Wheaton, IL, and is a member of College Church in Wheaton.

My Review:

After Acts by Bryan Litfin is a fascinating book describing the history of the lives of Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Mary, Thomas, James, Andrew, James the son of Zebedee, Philip, Bartholomew, James the son of Alphaeus, Judas Thaddeus, Simon the Zealot, Peter and Paul. This book explains the truth or fantasy of many accounts of the early church and notes in the Notes section other writings that support the authors arguments. Bryan Liftin explains that he wrote the book not to glamorize the early church but to bring clarity of stories that are often distorted. He desires each reader to explore the history of the Christian faith by studying those who have come before us and teaching the next generation. I recommend this book to anyone interested in history or the roots of Christianity.

Book Review: NIV My Journal Bible, Pink Published by Zondervan

_240_360_book_2032_cover

Book Description:

The NIV Holy Bible for Girls, Journal Edition is the perfect way to apply Scripture to your everyday life. Designed with the thoughtful writer in mind, a whimsical cover and journaling lines inspire reflection in God’s Word. This Bible contains the full text of the bestselling New International Version (NIV) translation.

Features include: Lines on each page for journaling and notes Thick paper perfect for any writing utensil A presentation page for gift giving A “How to Use This Bible” page to get started on the right foot Ribbon marker The complete text of the bestselling New International Version (NIV)

My Review:

I’ve been looking for a journal Bible for my artistic daughter. I thought that reviewing NIV My Journal Bible, Pink Published by Zondervan would be a great opportunity to find her a journal Bible. This book is also more compact than I was expecting. The size is aprox 8x6x1.75. The hardcover is nice.  I was expecting thicker paper based on the book description. Although the paper is thicker than most Bibles, I would still like it a bit thicker to use pens, markers and paint. The Bible itself is pretty cut and dry. There are no cross references or notes which is perfect for journaling. There are also no reference or maps sections except for the presentation page, the table of contents page, the list of the books of the Bible in alphabetical order, a preface in the front and a table of weights and measures on the last page. The preface explains the goals, translation philosophy, textual basis, footnotes and formatting of the NIV version. My daughter was excited to see this book come in the mail. One of the first thing she does is smells the book she is reviewing. She said it smells like a puzzle. I recommend this journal bible for anyone looking for a compact journaling Bible.
